Update at the end of early voting on Friday 23 August.
(A note on terminology – I will use ‘Early’ voting as an overall term for three separate categories of vote, Pre-Poll in person, voting by Mobile teams, and Postal voting.)
This post will track the number of Pre-Poll and Mobile votes taken during the campaign and the number of Postal Vote packs dispatched.
Final figures on Friday 23 August at the end of early voting. Note that it is possible some final mobile voting numbers from remote areas may not be added until tomorrow morning.
- 61,055 pre-poll votes have been taken representing 39.8% of enrolment. This is higher in votes but lower in percentage than 2020 when 60,295 pre-poll votes were taken representing 42.7% of enrolment.
- 8,316 postal vote packs have been dispatched representing 5.4% of enrolment. This is down on 10,241 packs dispatched in 2020 or 7.3% of enrolment.
- A total of 3,815 postal votes have been returned representing 45.9% of dispatched postal vote packs and 2.5% of enrolment.
- 13,074 mobile polling team votes have been collected representing 8.5% of enrolment, or 25.7% in the eight districts where mobile polling is used. This is down on 12,877 votes or 9.1% in 2020. At this stage it looks like the turnout for mobile polling is low. Some final reports of pre-polling may arrive on Saturday.
- In total 82,455 ballot papers have been issued or dispatched representing 53.8% of enrolment, down on 83,414 ballot papers or 59.1% in 2020. One difference is that fewer postal votes have been requested, the rate having been particularly high in 2020 due to Covid.
Note that in 2020 out of 141,225 enrolled voters, only 105,833 cast votes that were included in the count. The figure for 2024 may be around 110,000 votes, which suggests that 60% of votes have already been cast.
Based on campaign reporting, the final numbers for 2020 were –
- 60,295 pre-poll votes were taken taken representing 42.7% of enrolment.
- 10,242 postal vote packs were dispatched representing 7.3% of enrolment.
- 12,877 mobile polling team votes were collected representing 9.1% of enrolment.
The breakdown of these categories in the final results was slightly different. Some early and mobile votes cast out of district ended up reported as Absent votes for other districts. Not all postal votes were returned, others were cancelled out by the voter having cast an ordinary vote, and others were rejected because the paperwork was incorrect.
The final category totals reported as part of the 2020 NT election result were –
- 56,387 pre-poll votes were reported in results as pre-polls representing 39.9% of enrolment or 53.3% of total votes.
- 6,790 postal votes made the final count representing 4.8% of enrolment or 6.4% of all votes.
- 11,936 mobile polling team votes made it into the count reported as mobile team results and represented 8.5% of enrolment or 11.3% of all votes.
Previous Day's Updates
As at close of voting on Wednesday 21 August after nine days of pre-poll and mobile voting, the numbers stood at -
- 49,641 pre-poll votes have been taken representing 32.4% of enrolment. This is higher in votes but lower in percentage than to the same day in 2020 when 49,243 votes had been taken representing 34.9% of enrolment.
- 8,311 postal vote packs have been dispatched representing 5.4% of enrolment. This is down on 10,186 packs dispatched in 2020 or 7.2% of enrolment.
- A total of 2,733 postal votes have been returned representing 34.5% of dispatched postal vote packs and 1.8% of enrolment.
- 9,131 mobile polling team votes have been collected representing 5.9% of enrolment, or 18.0% in the eight districts where mobile polling is used. This is down on 9,913 votes or 7.0% in 2020. At this stage it looks like the turnout for mobile polling is very low, though many of the larger communities are visited in the second week of polling.
- In total 67,083 ballot papers have been issued or dispatched representing 43.8% of enrolment, down on 69,342 ballot papers or 49.1% in 2020. One difference is that fewer postal votes have been requested, the rate having been particularly high in 2020 due to Covid.
As at close of voting on Monday 19 August after seven days of pre-poll and mobile voting, the numbers stood at -
- 41,325 pre-poll votes have been taken representing 27.0% of enrolment. This is lower than to the same day in 2020 when 40,833 votes had been taken representing 28.9% of enrolment. The lack of Sunday pre-polling in 2024 accounts for the difference.
- 8,133 postal vote packs have been dispatched representing 5.3% of enrolment. This is down on 9,955 packs dispatched in 2020 or 7.0% of enrolment.
- Figures are now available on the number of postal votes that have been returned. As of Monday 19 August, 1,287 postal votes have been returned representing 16.2% of dispatched postal vote packs and 0.8% of all votes.
- 4,563 mobile polling team votes have been collected representing 3.0% of enrolment, or 9.0% in the eight districts where mobile polling is used. This is down on 5,074 votes or 3.6% in 2020. At this stage it looks like the turnout for mobile polling is very low, though many of the larger communities are visited in the second week of polling.
- In total 54,021 ballot papers have been issued or dispatched representing 35.3% of enrolment, down on 55,912 ballot papers or 39.6% in 2020. The main difference is that fewer postal votes have been requested, the rate having been particularly high in 2020 due to Covid.
As at close of voting on Saturday 17 August after four days of pre-poll and mobile voting, the numbers stood at -
- 36,831 pre-poll votes have been taken representing 24.0% of enrolment. This is higher in votes and now higher in percentage than for the same days in 2020 when 33,510 votes had been taken representing 23.7% of enrolment.
- 7,930 postal vote packs have been dispatched representing 5.2% of enrolment. This is down on 9,762 packs dispatched in 2020 or 6.9% of enrolment. Being a Saturday no postal votes were dispatched yesterday.
- 3,361 mobile polling team votes have been collected representing 2.2% of enrolment, or 6.6% in the eight districts where mobile polling is used. This is down on 3,808 votes or 2.7% in 2020. It should be noted that the remote nature of mobile polling means that the reporting of votes taken each day can lag and may be be up to date in the daily report. There were no mobile polling reports yesterday.
- In total 41,163 ballot papers have been issued or dispatched representing 26.9% of enrolment, down on 41,374 ballot papers or 29.3% in 2020. The main difference is that fewer postal votes have been requested, the rate having been particularly high in 2020 due to Covid.

- 24,182 pre-poll votes have been taken representing 15.8% of enrolment. This is higher in votes but lower as a percentage than for the same days in 2020 when 22,553 votes had been taken representing 16.0% of enrolment.
- 7,801 postal vote packs have been dispatched representing 5.1% of enrolment. This is down on 9,572 packs dispatched in 2020 or 6.8% of enrolment.
- 2,479 mobile polling team votes have been collected representing 1.62% of enrolment, or 3.88% in the eight districts where mobile polling is used. This is slightly down on 2,934 votes or 2.1% in 2020. Wednesday 14 August after three days of pre-poll and mobile voting, the numbers stood at -
- 18,867 pre-poll votes had been taken representing 12.3% of enrolment. This is only slightly higher than the first three days in 2020 when 17,668 votes had been taken representing 12.5% of enrolment.
- 7,449 postal vote packs had been dispatched representing 4.9% of enrolment. This is down on 9,427 packs dispatched in 2020 or 6.7% of enrolment.
- 1,973 mobile polling team votes had been collected representing 1.29% of enrolment, or 3.88% in the eight districts where mobile polling is used. This is slightly down on 2,043 votes or 1.4% in 2020. It should be noted that the remote nature of mobile polling means that the reporting of votes taken each day can lag and may be be up to date in the daily report.
- In total 28,289 ballot papers have been issued or dispatched representing 18.4% of enrolment, down on 29,138 ballot papers or 20.6% in 2020. The main difference is that fewer postal votes have been requested, the rate having been particularly high in 2020 due to Covid.
