Given the time at takes for the TEC to update their data, I assume that the Hare-Clark counts are done by hand still. Is that correct? Is every single ballot paper actually passed from one pile to another 50+ times in this whole process? Wouldn’t / shouldn’t it be possible to enter all the data into a computer and get the distributions automatically with the press of a button?
COMMENT: I understand they will be doing that at the next election, as long as it isn’t in the next 12 months.
Entering the hand count into a computer and then pressing a button to have a ‘black box’ computer… programmed and reprogrammed by God knows who… to distribute the results? What could possibly go wrong! 😆
COMMENT: Tasmania is the only Australian jurisdiction that does a hand distribution of preferences for its multi-member chamber. The Senate, all state upper house and the ACT Legislative Assembly all data enter the ballot papers and use a computer to undertake the distribution of preferences. I’m not sure why you believe Tasmania should not join the data entry club.
